Squirrel in the Chimney: What Not to Do and What Happens Next
A squirrel in a chimney can create loud scratching, debris and an immediate temptation to solve the problem quickly. Two of the most common reactions—lighting a fire or sealing the top—can make the situation worse.
Do not light the fireplace
Smoke and heat can injure the animal, and nesting material can create an obstruction or fire concern. Keep the fireplace unused until the chimney is clear.
Do not seal the chimney while the animal may still be inside
Installing a cap or screen before confirming that the squirrel and any young have left can trap animals inside the chimney.
The correct sequence is removal or exclusion first, inspection second, prevention last.
A mother may have young
During nesting season, the scratching may involve more than one animal. Removing an adult without accounting for dependent young can create another problem inside the chimney.
A wildlife professional can help determine the appropriate removal method and timing.
Inspect after removal
Squirrels can bring leaves, twigs and other materials into the chimney. Even when the animal is gone, the flue may not be ready for use.
Inspect for debris, nesting material, damaged screens or caps, and any problem that allowed entry.
Prevent the return
A chimney cap with appropriate screening can help reduce future wildlife access. It should be securely attached and compatible with the chimney and appliance so it does not interfere with venting.
If the squirrel enters the room
If an animal comes through the fireplace into the living space, keep people and pets away and give the animal a clear, safe exit if possible. Avoid chasing or handling wild animals directly.

Can a squirrel climb back out of a chimney?
Sometimes, depending on the chimney surface and configuration, but do not assume it can or will.
Should I cap the chimney immediately?
Only after confirming that no animal or dependent young will be trapped inside.
Do I need cleaning after a squirrel is removed?
An inspection should determine whether nesting material or debris remains and whether cleaning is needed.
