Smoke Chamber Repair

The smoke chamber is the sloped area just above the firebox that funnels smoke into the flue. When it's rough, damaged, or unparged, it can hurt draft and collect creosote.

A funnel that has to be smooth

The smoke chamber transitions the wide firebox into the narrower flue. Rough or stepped surfaces here slow smoke, encourage creosote to cling, and can contribute to smoke drifting back into the room. Parging smooths and seals those surfaces so smoke moves up cleanly.

Why it gets overlooked

The smoke chamber sits out of sight above the damper, so problems there are usually found during an inspection rather than noticed from the room. Repair restores a smooth, sealed transition into the flue.

  • Smoke drifting back into the room

Frequently asked questions

What does 'parging' the smoke chamber mean?

Parging applies a smooth coating to the smoke chamber so its surfaces are even and sealed, which helps smoke rise into the flue efficiently.

Can smoke chamber problems cause a smoky room?

They can contribute. A rough or damaged smoke chamber is one of several draft-related issues we look at when a fireplace smokes.
