Why Do I Hear Scratching Inside My Chimney?
Scratching inside a chimney is one of those sounds homeowners tend to notice at the worst possible time—often at night, early in the morning or just before they planned to use the fireplace.
The sound may come from a bird, squirrel or another animal, but the first step is not to start a fire and hope the problem leaves.
Listen to the pattern
Different sounds can provide clues:
- Repeated scratching or climbing may suggest a small mammal
- Fluttering or wingbeats may suggest a bird
- Chirping can indicate young birds
- Occasional tapping during wind may be a loose cap or metal component rather than wildlife
Sound alone cannot identify the species with certainty, but it helps determine what kind of inspection is needed.
Do not light a fire
Lighting a fire can injure or kill an animal, push smoke into the house if the flue is obstructed, and create a fire concern if nesting material is present.
Keep the fireplace unused until the situation is understood.
Check whether there may be an active bird nest
Federal protections can apply to migratory birds and active nests. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance states that active nests containing eggs or young generally should not be destroyed without authorization, with specific regulatory exceptions depending on circumstances.
If birds are involved, identification and nest status matter before removal.
Why a missing cap is often part of the story
A properly selected chimney cap can help reduce animal entry while also limiting rain and debris. If wildlife entered through an uncapped or damaged flue, fixing the access point after lawful removal is important or the problem may return.
After the animal is gone
Do not assume the chimney is ready for a fire immediately. Nesting material, feathers, debris or damage may remain in the venting path.
An inspection can confirm that the flue is clear and assess whether the cap or chimney top needs repair.

Can I smoke an animal out of the chimney?
No. Fire can injure wildlife and may be unsafe if the flue is blocked by nesting material.
Does scratching always mean an animal?
No. Loose metal components can also make noise, especially in wind.
Should the chimney be inspected after an animal leaves?
Yes. Debris, nesting material or damage may remain.
