Chimney Damper Problems: Stuck, Rusted, Missing or Not Sealing
The damper is one of the few chimney components homeowners operate directly. In a traditional fireplace, it opens the path for smoke and combustion gases to move into the chimney and closes when the fireplace is not in use.
Never burn with a closed damper
The damper must be fully open before starting a fire and remain open while combustion products still need to vent.
A partially closed damper can contribute to smoke spillage and carbon-monoxide concerns.
Why dampers rust
Moisture entering through the top of the chimney can reach metal dampers. Rust may make the plate difficult to move or prevent it from closing.
If the damper is rusted, inspect for the water source rather than replacing the damper alone.
Warping after high heat
A chimney fire or repeated overheating can distort metal components. A warped damper may be one clue that the chimney has experienced excessive temperatures and deserves a more detailed inspection.
Energy loss through an old throat damper
Traditional metal dampers rarely seal airtight. In winter, warm house air can escape up the chimney; in summer, outdoor air and odors may enter.
A top-sealing damper is an alternative in some masonry fireplace systems. It closes at the chimney top and can also help block precipitation and animals, but it must be appropriate for the fireplace and installed correctly.
Do not confuse damper problems with draft problems
A damper that is fully open does not guarantee proper draft. Blockages, negative pressure, flue sizing and chimney termination can still cause smoke spillage.

Can I use the fireplace if the damper is stuck open?
The system may vent, but the broken mechanism still deserves repair and the chimney should be evaluated for why it failed.
What if the damper will not open fully?
Do not use the fireplace until the restriction is corrected.
Does a top-sealing damper replace a chimney cap?
Some designs provide top protection, but system configuration determines whether additional cap/screen components are needed.
